What is x-height?

X-height is the height of a font's lowercase letters, like the letter x, which strongly affects how large and readable the font looks.

X-height is the distance from the baseline, where letters sit, to the top of lowercase letters that have no tall parts, such as x, a and e. Two fonts set at the same size can look very different because one has a taller x-height. Fonts with a generous x-height tend to read better on screens and at small sizes.

Why it matters for your business: When choosing a body font for your website, a larger x-height often means better readability on phones.
