What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is a name added in front of your domain, like shop.yourbusiness.com, used to run a separate section or service.

A subdomain is an extra name placed before your main domain, separated by a dot. In shop.yourbusiness.com, "shop" is the subdomain. You create subdomains in your DNS settings at no extra registration cost, because you already own the main domain. They are often used for an online store, a booking tool, a client portal or a staging copy of your site. Each subdomain can point to a different service with its own DNS record.

Why it matters for your business: Subdomains let you add tools under your own brand name instead of a vendor's address, which builds trust with customers.
